10 steps to introduce street fighting for a new trainee

Image
Having taught KravMaga for many years and especially short-term courses to police and prison guards, who are constantly exposed to violent confrontations, I have arrived at a simple methodology of 10 steps, based on KravMaga principles.  KravMaga SreeRam training TamilNadu Police Commandos The dominant elements of this methodology is 'Survival' and "Safety' more than 'Fighting' . Street fighting Priorities by KravMaga SreeRam STAGES IN 1ST LEVEL TEACHING OF SELF-DEFENCE Step 1 - Safety in training Step 2 -  How to defend using hands & legs Step 3 -  How to strike using legs / hands Step 4 -  How to combine defence and Strikes Step 5 -  How to move in different directions without falling Step 6 -  Practice Sparring in predictable environment Step 7 -  Introduce reaction to unpredictable attacks Step 8 -  Train for reality - react from uncomfortable positions  Step 9 -  Introduce basics of multiple attackers Ste...

As a Kravist, what can I learn from Sachin

Image
Sachin is a great athlete. For many cricket fans he is more than that.. He is God! Today, when I read Sachin is retiring I asked myself " What made Sachin what he is!?” The most obvious quality that set Sachin apart from the mortals was his natural talent for cricket. We cannot emulate that, since not all are born blessed with it. But, there were many cricketers who had the same talent as Sachin. But none could rise to that height and sustain that level for years, like him. So I looked at Sachin's qualities which differentiated him, other than natural talent. DEDICATION Its common knowledge that Sachin practised for at least 12 hours. He took every aspect of the game apart and gained expertise in each of them. Passion backed up with Dedication!  That sets apart the champion from others. They dedicate time for practice, time for introspection and time for learning; more than their peers. FOCUS Fame is heady. Especially in the glamour world of Indian c...

The police & fake encounters - Tip of the iceberg

Image
The Dynamics of Police encounters  - Part III After the recent police encounter in TamilNadu, furious debates are happening in every media channel; in some of which I also participated. Instead of analysing this specific encounter and getting into shallow arguments, I want to talk on the larger aspects like -        How does the public view Police?       The ills of Indian police          How equipped / skilled are our police?               Infrastructure & Training       Why encounters happen?       What the public wants and how it can be realized? How does the public view police? Sheep dog and wolf analogy - According to Geoff Thompson , Police are the 'Sheep dog'. which protects the 'Innocent herd of Sheep".  The criminal is akin to the "Wolf" When there is no threat; the sheep hate the presence of the ...

4 Ds of stopping a violent confrontation

Image
The prisons are filled with normal people like you and me. They landed in the prison just because they lost their sanity for a few seconds. Frightening, isn’t it!  When you realise that everything built over a lifetime can be lost in a jiffy. “Violence starts where civilization ends." KravMaga system takes this dictum into cognizance and advocates physical violence only as last resort, when all civilized options are exhausted. What are the triggers of Violence? Volatile situations happen every day in bar rooms, board rooms and bed rooms. Wherever there is more than one individual, opinions may differ. Unfortunately and unexpectedly, sometimes these differences escalate to physical violence. Aggression can be internally present. A small minority do carry their aggression blatantly. They are by nature bullies or brought up in a social/domestic condition where violence is a pre-requisite for daily survival. Aggression...
