The Dynamics of Police encounters - Part 2 The background of encountered criminals

Image
The Dynamics of Police encounters - Part 2 The background of encountered criminals - Venkatesh Pannaiyar This was an encounter which resulted in the transfer of the charismatic Vijayakumar IPS, the then Commissioner of Police, Chennai. Read on to understand how the police fight crime with one arm tied behind their back. Also how the media, which cant shed its caste and community prejudices, packed off an efficient officer from the state itself, in spite of delivering whatever assignment given to him. VENKATESH PANNAIYAR - THE BACKGROUND  The diminutive and nattily dressed Venkatesh Pannaiyar won’t physically fit the prevalent image of a don. But he is a product of generations of caste feud plaguing Southern TamilNadu. His family is from Moolakarai near Tuiticorin; an area with the dubious reputation for making country bombs and gun running. Venkatesh's uncle, grandfather - important elders of their community have been murdered by Dalits, when he was a boy. Venkate...

The Dynamics of Police encounters - Part 1

The Dynamics of Police encounters - Part 1 Since 2002 I have been asked to assist the police on various ‘encounters’, including the recent Chennai Bank robbery gang. Having the twin advantage of the objectivity as a civilian who enjoys the front-row view of the inner dynamics of police-criminal confrontations, I have my two cents worth on the subject of police encounters. I will be covering the Media's role in this first part. I will proceed to the encountered criminals' background and later how equipped is the force for effective policing. Part I - Police encounters and the Media THE REPONSIBILITY OF MEDIA I totally accept the dictum that in a working democracy each institution, like Legislature, Judiciary, Politicians and the Media has also the responsibility of keeping each others in check. This prevents power being blatantly misused by any unchecked institution. The media does its journalistic duty of putting everything on the proper perspective, by givin...

CLOSE COMBAT FOR POLICE - CONCERNS IN TEACHING

Image
KravMaga close combat for Police   The concerns to be taken into consideration when training police in close combat are – CONCERN 1 - Police can't use force disproportionate to the threat and risk being censured by human rights activists and media . The techniques taught to field patrol officers should NOT involve hitting of vital parts KravMaga teaches hitting VULNERABLE parts & NOT VITAL parts The focus should be on DISARMING, cutting his MOBILITY and CONTROL of the aggressor. CONCERN 2 - While a civilian can neutralize an attacker and leave the scene, Police job is NOT complete till control and arrest of the attacker. Stress on submission techniques & takedowns. Emphasize personal safety of the policeman – (ex) long weapon > go short; short weapon >> go long Teach criminal escorting holds CONCERN 3 - While civilian training is more on self defense, training to police has to give importance to pro-active intervention in a violent situation. Teach interven...

The 10-A s of Personal Safety for Women & Kids- Part II

Image
In the last post we looked at the first 5A-s of Personal safety. In this post, we look at briefly the next 5 As in the The 10A-s of personal Safety 6.ASSERT 7.AGILE 8.ATTENTION 9.ACT 10.ARMED Lets be now elaborate on them - 6. ASSERT DON'T LET HIM CLOSE DISTANCE Don’t allow a criminal to close the distance The common ploy is to come near you, under a pretext - like asking for directions. Give them clear instructions to be at least 6 feet away and ask whatever they have to. By giving him clear area demarcation, you will know early that his intentions are criminal if he crosses that 'lakshman rekha’ Be clear in your communication DON'T BE SUBTLE IN SAYING 'NO' Subtle hints do not work with men who are drunk or sexually excited. Speak clearly that you dislike what they are doing. Teach this to young girls, because they are also confused, when a known person behaves dirty. 7. AGILE Run away as fast as you can Some may wonder...

Applying KravMaga principles to living - Visualization

Image
The effects of Visualization can be dramatic on the Mind as well as the Body. After I recently implemented Visualization as part of my KravMaga classes, the improvement in my trainees is amazing. This is a discussion on benefits and techniques of Visualizing in KravMaga training ; and then carrying those techniques to other areas of life. It’s a learning process and I welcome inputs from you all. How Visualization benefited my KravMaga trainees I have already outlined what happens to the body and mind in a state of shock.   So, when I teach self defence techniques there was always a niggling worry whether my trainees will be able to respond without delay to a sudden un-predictable assault. I felt the answer was to turn the problem into the solution; the provocation which freezes our mind should be converted as the mental cue for action. So once the trainee was familiar with the technique, I asked them to close their eyes and visualize the mo...

The 10-A s of Personal Safety for Women & Kids- Part I

Image
Earlier , we analysed what precautions against kidnapping a School and Parent can take . Now, we outline the safety precautions against kidnapping, which can be adopted by a potential victim, especially a kid. Many will sound so basic and obvious. But you will be surprised to know that they are routinely overlooked, by sheer apathy or pre-occupation. Or worse by being cynical. 1. AVOID Avoid creating a situation which increases your risk exposure. The risk may be due to the Place, the Time or the Persons around. The risk is multiplied when these elements come together . Like lonely road, late night and a suspicious character coming towards you.  Read about the AOI triangle which is an easy formula for understanding risk . 2. ACCESS Prevent easy access. Create as many obstacles between a threa t and you; wherever you are. At home it may mean locked windows and doors - which are 2 layered, so that you can see clearly who is ...

Safety procedures to prevent kidnapping - For Schools & Parents

Image
Kidnap - nap (to seize) kid ( a child) The child kidnapping crime has been around for time immemorial, for varied motives – Anger & frustration, Money, Political or Sex. After the recent spate of kidnappings in TamilNadu, the police have announced certain guidelines  - for Parents, School authorities and the Kids themselves. Very sane advice, no doubt. To understand the issue at hand, we analyze it a bit more. Kidnapping has some unique characteristics - Mostly the victim is the softest target of all - Childre n Kidnapping is generally NOT a crime committed in sudden burst of anger or impulse, because it needs elaborate planning of logistics. That pre-supposes that the criminal should be reasonably familiar with the victim's universe. In the case of kidnap for sexual assault , it’s different. The victim may be chosen on parameters like vulnerability and circumstances. In kidnap crimes, the police are at a disadvantage , ...
